Operational Research (OR) as a subject was introduced in the University of
Delhi in 1963 with the introduction of a two-year postgraduate
programme. A decade later in 1973, the Department of
Operational Research was independently set up under the Faculty of Mathematical
Sciences. It is the first department in India to start a postgraduate
programme in Operational Research. Operational Research focuses on advancing
Operational Research/Management
Science (OR/MS) and Analytics through theoretical
insights, methodological developments, and real-world case
studies.
The Department of Operational Research at the University of Delhi (DU) is
actively involved in a wide spectrum of cutting-edge research, driving both theoretical
advancements and real-world applications. The department is renowned for its focus on mathematical
modeling, optimization techniques, and decision-making frameworks,
contributing significantly to the discipline of Operational Research.
Faculty and scholars are currently engaged in multiple ongoing research projects that address
contemporary challenges across sectors. Notable domains include Supply Chain Optimization,
Game Theory Applications, and Simulation Modelling, each aimed at enhancing
system efficiency, strategic planning, and predictive analytics. These initiatives reflect the department’s
commitment to fostering innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research
excellence.

Message from Head of the Department
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Operational Research at the
University of Delhi. In today’s data-rich and technology-driven
world, Operational Research plays an increasingly vital role across diverse sectors such as
finance, marketing, logistics, defense,
telecom, energy systems, and public policy. The MOR
programme places special emphasis on analytical modelling, statistical
inference, machine learning techniques, and the use of powerful data analysis
tools to extract actionable insights. In their final semester, students undertake
industry-linked projects, applying the techniques and skills acquired throughout the programme to
real-world challenges.
